Shaker Kitchen Inspiration

Shaker kitchens are still high on the must-have list for many of our clients — and it is easy to see why. The shaker style has clean lines, honest construction and a warmth that suits almost every home, from a Victorian terrace to a new build. Done properly, a shaker kitchen never dates; it simply settles in. Here is what we have learned about making them well.

What makes a kitchen shaker?

The shaker style is defined by its simplicity: a flat recessed centre panel surrounded by a frame, with minimal ornament and solid, balanced proportions. The original shakers believed form should follow function, and their furniture carried that idea through every detail. In a modern kitchen that translates to doors with a true framed construction, timber that feels substantial in the hand, and hardware that complements rather than competes — like the brushed brass piano hinges and handles we fitted on a recent Bowdon commission with Hafele UK fixtures.

In-frame or lay-on?

A key choice in any shaker kitchen is whether the doors sit inside a face frame (in-frame) or overlay the cabinet (lay-on). In-frame shaker cabinets have a distinctly traditional, furniture-like feel — the doors sit flush within a visible frame, which is exactly the look many clients picture when they say shaker. Because our kitchens are made to measure in our own Altrincham factory, we build both, and our designers will show you the difference in 3D renders so you can choose with confidence.

Colour and contrast

The shaker door is a calm canvas, which is why colour works so well with it. Deep blues and muted greys are the classic pairing — as on our Kitchen, Bar & Media Project in Bowdon, finished in blue and grey tones with stone worktops. Two-tone designs take it further: darker cabinetry on the lower run, lighter above, or a contrasting island. Add a Quooker boiling tap, integrated wine racks and bookshelf storage, and the kitchen becomes as practical as it is beautiful.

Made by hand, not made by machine

The difference between a shaker kitchen that lasts thirty years and one that shows its age in five is the making of it. Our shaker doors are built by our own cabinet makers — real timber frames, proper joints and finishes applied in our factory in Altrincham — and fitted by our own employed team. Every commission carries our five-year guarantee on workmanship and furniture.
